Object-relations

I have often expressed my view that object-relations exist from the beginning of life, the first object being the mother’s breast which to the child becomes split into a good (gratifying) and bad (frustrating) breast; this splitting results in a severance of love and hate. I have further suggested that the relation to the first object implies its introjection and projection, and thus from the beginning object-relations are moulded by an interaction between introjection and projection, between internal and external objects and situations. These processes participate in the building up of the ego and super-ego and prepare the ground for the onset of the Oedipus complex in the second half of the first year.

Notes on Some Schizoid Mechanisms (III-pp2)

Internal world

Along with the child’s relation’ first to his mother and soon to his father and other people, go those processes of internalization on which I have laid so much stress in my work. The baby, having incorporated his parents, feels them to be live people inside his body in the concrete way in which deep unconscious phantasies are experienced ―― they are, in his mind,  ‘internal’ or ‘inner’ objects, as I have termed them. Thus an inner world is being built up in the child’s unconscious mind, corresponding to his actual experiences and the impressions he gains from people and the external world, and yet altered by his own phantasies and impulses. If it is a world of people predominantly at peace with each other and with the ego, inner harmony, security and integration ensue.

There is a constant interaction between anxieties relating to the ‘external’ mother ―― and those relating to the ‘internal ‘ mother, and the methods used by the ego for dealing with these two sets of anxieties are closely inter-related. In the baby’s mind, the ‘internal’ mother is bound up with the ‘external’ one, of whom she is a ‘double’, though one which at once undergoes alterations in his mind through the very process of internalization; that is to say, her image is influenced by his phantasies, and by internal stimuli and internal experiences of all kinds.

Mourning and Its relation to Manic-depressive States (I-345)

Phantasy

The baby’s impulses and feelings are accompanied by a kind of mental activity which I take to be the most primitive one: that is phantasy-building, or more colloquially, imaginative thinking. For instance, the baby who feels a craving for his mother’s breast when it is not there may imagine it to be there, i.e. he may imagine the satisfaction which he derives from it. Such primitive phantasying is the earliest form of the capacity which later develops into the more elaborate workings of the imagination.

The early phantasies which go along with the baby’s feelings are of various kinds. In the one just mentioned he imagines the gratification which he lacks. Pleasant phantasies, however, also accompany actual satisfaction; and destructive phantasies go along with frustration and the feelings of hatred which this arouses. When a baby feels frustrated at the breast, in his phantasies he attacks this breast; but if he is being gratified by the breast, he loves it and has phantasies of a pleasant kind in relation to it. In his aggressive phantasies he wishes to bite up and to tear up his mother and her breasts, and to destroy her also in other ways.

A most important feature of these destructive phantasies, which are tantamount to death-wishes, is that the baby feels that what he desires in his phantasies has really taken place; that is to say he feels that he has really destroyed the object of his destructive impulses, and is going on destroying it: this has extremely important consequences for the development of his mind. The baby finds support against these fears in omnipotent phantasies of a restoring kind: that too has extremely important consequences for his development.

Love, guilt and reparation (I-pp308)

Projection

As I said before, the object of all these phantasies is, to begin with, the breast of the mother.

… Thus the breast of the mother which gives gratification of denies it becomes, in the mind of the child, imbued with the characteristics of good and evil. Now, what one might call the ‘good’ breasts become the prototype of what is felt throughout life to be good and beneficent, while the ‘bad’ breasts stand for every thing evil and persecuting. The reason for this can be explained by the fact that, when the child turns his hatred against the denying or ‘bad’ breast, he attributes to the breast itself all his own active hatred against it ―― a process which is termed projection.

Weaning (I-290)

Introjection

But there is another process of great importance going on at the same time, namely, that of introjection. By this is meant the mental activity in the child, by which, in his phantasy, he takes into himself everything which he perceives in the outside world. We know that at this stage the child receives his main satisfaction through his mouth, which therefore becomes the main channel through which the child takes in not only his food, but also, in his phantasy, the world outside him. Not only the mouth, but to a certain degree the whole body with all its senses and functions, performs this ‘taking in’ process ―― for instance, the child breathes in, takes in through his eyes, his ears, through touch and so on. To begin with, the breast of the mother is the object of his constant desire, and therefore this is the first thing to be introjected. In phantasy the child sucks the breast into himself, chews it up and swallows it; thus he feels that he has actually got it there, that he possesses the mother’s breast within himself, in both its good and in its bad aspects.

Weaning (I-291)

Symbol

Thus, not only does symbolism come to be the foundation of all phantasy and sublimation but, more than that, it is the basis of the subject’s relation to the outside world and to reality in general.

… We see then that the child’s earliest reality is wholly phantastic; he is surrounded with objects of anxiety, and in this respect excrement, organs, objects, things animate and inanimate are to begin with equivalent to one another. As the ego develops, a true relation to reality is gradually established out of this unreal reality.

The Importance of Symbol-Formation in the Development of the Ego (I-221)

Sadism

My argument in this paper is based on the assumption that there is an early stage of mental development at which sadism becomes active at all the various sources of libidinal pleasure. In my experience sadism reaches its height in this phase, which is ushered in by the oral-sadistic desire to devour the mother’s breast (or the mother herself) and passes away with the earlier anal stage. At the period of which I am speaking, the subject’s dominant aim is to possess himself of the contents of the mother’s body and to destroy her by means of every weapon which sadism can command. At the same time this phase forms the introduction to the Oedipus conflict. Genital trends now begin to exercise an influence, but this is as yet not evident, for the pregental impulses hold the field. My whole argument depends on the fact that the Oedipus conflict begins at a period when sadism predominates.

The child expects to find within the mother (a) the father’s penis, (b) excrement, and (c) children, and these things it equates with edible substances. According to the child’s earliest phantasies (or ‘sexual theories’) of parental coitus, the father’s penis (or his whole body) becomes incorporated in the mother during the act. Thus the child’s sadistic attacks have for their object both father and mother, who are in phantasy bitten, torn, cut or stamped to bits. The attacks give rise to anxiety lest the subject should be punished by the united parents, and this anxiety also becomes internalized in consequence of the oral-sadistic introjection of the objects and is thus already directed towards the early super-ego. I have found these anxiety-situations of the early phases of mental development to be the most profound and overwhelming. It is my experience that in the phantasied attack on the mother’s body a considerable part is played by the urethral and anal sadism which is very soon added to the oral and muscular sadism. In phantasy the excreta are transformed into dangerous weapons: wetting is regarded as cutting, stabbing, burning, drowning, while the faecal mass is equated with weapons and missiles. At a later stage of the phase which I have described, these violent modes of attack give place to hidden assaults by the most refined methods which sadism can devise, and the excreta are equated with poisonous substances.

The Importance of Symbol-Formation in the Development of the Ego (I-219)

I have repeatedly alluded to the conclusion that the Oedipus complex comes into operation earlier than is usually supposed. In my paper, ‘The Psychological Principles of Early Analysis’, I discussed this subject in greater detail. The conclusion which I reached there was that the Oedipus tendencies are released in consequence of the frustration which the child experiences at weaning, and that they make their appearance at the end of the first and the beginning of the second year of life; they receive reinforcement through the anal frustrations undergone during training in cleanliness.

Early Stages of the Oedipus Conflict (I-pp186)

As I see it, the boy’s and girl’s sexual and emotional development from early infancy onwards includes genital sensations and trends, which constitute the first stages of the inverted and positive Oedipus complex; they are experienced under the primacy of oral libido and mingle with urethral and anal desires and phantasies. The libidinal stages overlap from the earliest months of life onwards. The positive and inverted Oedipus tendencies are from their inception in close interaction. It is during the stage of genital primacy that the positive Oedipus situation reaches its climax.

The Oedipus Complex in the Light of Early Anxieties (I-pp416)

Super-ego

According to my observations, the formation of the super-ego is a simpler and more direct process. The Oedipus conflict and the super-ego set in under the supremacy of the pre-genital impulses, and the objects which have been introjected in the oral-sadistic phase ―― the first object cathexes and identifications ―― form the beginnings of the early super-ego. Moreover, what initiates the formation of the super-ego and governs its earliest stages are the destructive impulses and the anxiety they arouse.

The Psycho-Analysis of Children (II-pp136)

In this way, first the mother’s breast (and the mother) becomes in the infant’s mind a devouring object and these fears soon extend to the father’s penis and to the father. At the same time, since devouring implies from the beginning the internalization of the devoured object, the ego is felt to contain devoured and devouring objects. Thus the super-ego is built up from the devouring breast (mother) to which is added the devouring penis (father). These cruel and dangerous internal figures become the representatives of the death instinct. Simultaneously the other aspect of the early super-ego is formed first by the internalized good breast (to which is added the good penis of the father), which is felt as a feeding and helpful internal object, and as the representative of the life instinct.

On the Theory of Anxiety and Guilt (III-pp30)

The early ego

I would also say that the early ego largely lack cohesion. And a tendency towards integration alternates with a tendency towards disintegration, a falling into bits. I believe that these fluctuations are characteristic of the first few months of life.

We are, I think, justified in assuming that some of the functions which we know from the later ego are there at the beginning. Prominent amongst these functions is that of dealing with anxiety. I hold that anxiety arises from the operation of the death instinct within the organism, is felt as fear of annihilation (death) and takes the form of fear of persecution. The fear of the destructive impulse seems to attach itself at once to an object ―― or rather it is experienced as the fear of an uncontrollable overpowering object.

The vital need to deal with anxiety forces the early ego to develop fundamental mechanisms and defences. The destructive impulse is partly projected outwards (deflection of the death instinct) and, I think, attaches itself to the first external object, the mother’s breast.

Notes on Some Schizoid Mechanisms (III-pp4)

Anxiety

We know, however, that the destructive instinct is directed against the organism itself and must therefore be regarded by the ego as a danger. I believe it is this danger which is felt by the individual as anxiety. Therefore anxiety would originate from aggression.

The Psycho-analysis of Children (II-pp126)

I would also think that if we assume the existence of a death instinct, we must also assume that in the deepest layers of the mind there is a response to this instinct in the form of fear of annihilation of life. Thus in my view the danger arising from the inner working of the death instinct is the first cause of anxiety. Since the struggle between the life and death instincts persists throughout life, this source of anxiety is never eliminated and enters as a perpetual factor into all anxiety-situations.

On the Theory of Anxiety and Guilt (III-pp29)

Splitting

The recurrent experiences of gratification and frustration are powerful stimuli for libidinal and destructive impulses, for love and hatred. As a result, the breast, inasmuch as it is gratifying, is loved and felt to be ‘good’; in so far as it is a source of frustration, it is hated and felt to be ‘bad’. This strong antithesis between the good breast and the bad breast is largely due to lack of integration of the ego, as well as to splitting processes within the ego and in relation to the object.

Some Theoretical Conclusions Regarding the Emotional Life of the Infant (III-pp62)

For instance, it appears that together with splitting the breast into two aspects, loved and hated (good and bad), splitting of a different nature exists which gives rise to the feeling that the ego, as well as its object, is in pieces; these processes underlie states of disintegration.

Some Theoretical Conclusions Regarding the Emotional Life of the Infant (III-pp66)

I believe that the ego is incapable of splitting the object ―― internal and external ―― without a corresponding splitting taking place within the ego. Therefore the phantasies and feelings about the state of the internal object vitally influence the structure of the ego. The more sadism prevails in the process of incorporating the object, and the more the object is felt to be in pieces, the more the ego is in danger of being split in relation to the internalized object fragments.

Notes on Some Schizoid Mechanisms (III-pp6)

Freud stated that the ego differentiates itself from the id by the repression-resistance barrier. I have found that splitting is one of the initial defences and precedes repression, which I assume begins to operate in about the second year. Normally no splitting is absolute, any more than repression is absolute. The conscious and unconscious parts of the ego are therefore not separated by a rigid barrier; as Freud described it, in speaking of the different areas of the mind, they are shaded off into each other.

On the Development of Mental Functioning (III-pp244)

Idealization

Idealization is bound up with the splitting of the object, for the good aspects of the breast are exaggerated as a safeguard against the fear of the persecuting breast. While idealization is thus the corollary of persecutory fear, it also springs from the power of the instinctual desires which aim at unlimited gratification and therefore create the picture of an inexhaustible and always bountiful breast ―― an ideal breast.

Notes on Some Schizoid Mechanisms (III-pp7)

Denial

However, the bad object is not only kept apart from the good one but its very existence is denied, as is the whole situation of frustration and the bad feelings (pain) to which frustration gives rise. This is bound up with denial of psychic reality. The denial of psychic reality becomes possible only through strong feelings of omnipotence ―― an essential characteristic of early mentality. Omnipotent denial of the existence of the bad object and of the painful situation is in the unconscious equal to annihilation by the destructive impulse. It is, however, not only a situation and an object that are denied and annihilated ―― it is an object-relation which suffers this fate; and therefore a part of the ego, from which the feelings towards the object emanate, is denied and annihilated as well.

Notes on Some Schizoid Mechanisms (III-pp7)

I enumerated various typical defences of the early ego, such as the mechanisms of splitting the object and the impulses, idealization, denial of inner and outer reality and the stifling of emotions. I also mentioned various anxiety-contents, including the fear of being poisoned and devoured. Most of these phenomena ―― prevalent in the first few months of life ―― are found in the later symptomatic picture of schizophrenia.

This early period (first described as the ‘persecutory phase’) I later termed ‘paranoid position’, and held that it precedes the depressive position. If persecutory fears are very strong, and for this reason (among others) the infant cannot work through the paranoid-schizoid position, the working through of depressive position is in turn impeded.

Notes on Some Schizoid Mechanisms (III-pp2)

Projective identification

Much of the hatred against parts of the self is now directed towards the mother. This leads to a particular form of identification which establishes the prototype of an aggressive object-relation. I suggest for these processes the term ‘projective identification’. When projection is mainly derived from the infant’s impulse to harm or to control the mother, he feels her to be a persecutor. In psychotic disorders this identification of an object with the hated parts of the self contributes to the intensity of the hatred directed against other people. As far as the ego is concerned the excessive splitting off and expelling into the outer world of parts of itself considerably weaken it.

Notes on Some Schizoid Mechanisms (III-pp8)

In these various phantasies, the ego takes possession by projection of an external object ―― first of all the mother ―― and makes it into an extension of the self. The object becomes to some extent a representative of the ego, and these processes are in my view the basis for identification by a projection or ‘projective identification’. Identification by introjection and identification by projection appear to be complementary processes.

Some Theoretical Conclusions Regarding the Emotional Life of the Infant (III-pp68)

Depressive position

In the normal course of events the ego is faced at this point of its development ―― roughly between four and five months of age ―― with the necessity to acknowledge psychic reality as well as the external reality to a certain degree. It is thus made to realize that the loved object is at the same time the hated one; and, in addition to this, that the real objects and the imaginary figures, both external and internal, are bound up with each other. I have pointed out elsewhere that in the very young child there exist, side by side with its relations to real objects ―― but on a different plane, as it were ―― relations to its unreal imagos, both as excessively good and excessively bad figures, and that these two kinds of object-relations intermingle and colour each other to an ever-increasing degree in the course of development. The first important steps in this direction occur, in my view, when the child comes to know its mother as a whole person and becomes identified with her as a whole, real and loved person. It is then that the depressive position ―― the characteristics of which I have described in this paper ―― come to the fore. This position is stimulated and reinforced by the ‘loss of the loved object’ which the baby experiences over and over again when the mother’s breast is taken away from it, and this loss reaches its climax during weaning.

A Contribution to the Psychogenesis of Manic-Depressive States (I-285)

In my paper ‘A Contribution to the Psychogenesis of Manic-Depressive States’, I introduced the conception of the infantile depressive position and showed the connection between that position and manic-depressive states.

… I said there that the baby experiences depressive feelings which reach a climax just before, during and after weaning. This is the state of mind in the baby which I termed the ‘depressive position’, and I suggested that it is a melancholia in statu nascendi. The object which is being mourned is the mother’s breast and all that the breast and the milk have come to stand for in the infant’s mind: namely, love, goodness and security. All these are felt by the baby to be lost, and lost as a result of his own uncontrollable greedy and destructive phantasies and impulses against his mother’s breast. Further distress about impending loss (this time of both parents) arises out of the Oedipus situation, which sets in so early and in such close connection with breast frustrations that in its beginnings it is dominated by oral impulses and fears. The circle of loved objects who are attacked in phantasy, and whose loss is therefore feared, widens owing to the child’s ambivalent relations to his brothers and sisters. The aggression against phantasied brothers and sisters, who are attacked inside the mother’s body, also gives rise to feelings of guilt and loss of the ‘good’ objects, that is to say, the depressive position, is in my experience, the deepest source of the painful conflicts in the Oedipus situation, as well as in the child’s relations to people in general. In normal development these feelings of grief and fears are overcome by various methods.

Mourning and Its relation to Manic-depressive States (I-344)

With the introjection of the complete object in about the second quarter of the first year marked steps in integration are made. This implies important changes in the relation to objects. The loved and hated aspects of the mother are no longer felt to be so widely separated, and the result is an increased fear of loss, states akin to mourning and a strong feeling of guilt, because the aggressive impulses are felt to be directed against the loved object. The depressive position has come to the fore. The very experience of depressive feelings in turn has the effect of further integrating the ego, because it makes for an increased understanding of psychic reality and better perception of the external world, as well as for a greater synthesis between inner and external situation.

Notes on Some Schizoid Mechanisms (III-pp14)

The child’s feelings of guilt which are bound up with its urethral and anal-sadistic tendencies are derived, I have found, from the phantasied attacks it makes on its mother’s body during the phase when sadism is at its height.

When I first introduced my concept of the depressive position in the paper referred to above, I suggested that depressive anxiety and guilt arise with the introjection of the objet as a whole. My further work on the paranoid-schizoid position, which precedes the depressive position, has let me to the conclusion that though in the first stage destructive impulses and persecutory anxiety predominate, depressive anxiety and guilt already play some part in the infant’s earliest object-relation, i.e. in his relation to his mother’s breast.

On the Theory of Anxiety and Guilt (III-pp29)

Manic defence

When the depressive position arise, the ego is forced (in addition to earlier defences) to develop methods of defence which are essentially directed against the ‘pining’ for the loved object. These are fundamental to the whole ego-organization. I formerly termed some of these methods manic defences, or the manic position, because of their relationship to the manic-depressive illness.

The fluctuation between the depressive and the manic position are an essential part of normal development. The ego is driven by depressive anxieties (anxiety lest the loved objects as well as itself should be destroyed) to build up omnipotent and violent phantasies, partly for the purpose of controlling and mastering the ‘bad’, dangerous objects, partly in order to save and restore the loved ones. From the very beginning these omnipotent phantasies, both the destructive and the reparative ones, stimulate and enter into all the activities, interests and sublimations of the child. In the infant the extreme character both of his sadistic and of his constructive phantasies is in line with the extreme frightfulness of his persecutors ―― and, at the other end of the scale, the extreme perfection of his ‘good’ objects. Idealization is an essential part of the manic position and is bound up with another important element of that position, namely denial.

Mourning and Its relation to Manic-depressive States (I-348)

Reparation

At this stage, the drive to make reparation to the injured object comes into full play. This tendency, as we have seen earlier, is inextricably linked with feelings of guilt. When the infant feels that his destructive impulses and phantasies are directed against the complete person of his loved object, guilt arises in full strength and, together with it, the over-riding urge to repair, preserve or revive the loved injured object. These emotions in my view amount to states of mourning, and the defences operating to attempts on the part of the ego to overcome mourning.

Since the tendency to make reparation ultimately derives from the life instinct, it draws on libidinal phantasies and desires. This tendency enters into all sublimations, and remains from that stage onwards the great means by which depression is kept at bay and diminished.

Some Theoretical Conclusions Regarding the Emotional Life of the Infant (III-pp74)

Envy

Envy appears to be inherent in oral greed. My analytic work has shown me that envy (alternating with feelings of love and gratification) is first directed towards the feeding breast. To this primary envy jealousy is added when the Oedipus situation arises.

Some Theoretical Conclusions Regarding the Emotional Life of the Infant (III-pp78)

A distinction should be drawn between envy, jealousy, and greed. Envy is the angry feeling that another person possesses and enjoys something desirable ―― the envious impulse being to take it away or to soil it. Moreover, envy implies the subject’s relation to one person only and goes back to the earliest exclusive relation with the mother. Jealousy is based on envy, but involves a relation to at least two people; it is mainly concerned with love that the subject feels is his due and has been taken away, or is in danger of being taken away, from him by his rival. In the everyday conception of jealousy, a man or a woman feels deprived of the loved person by somebody else.

Greed is an impetuous and insatiable craving, exceeding what the subject needs and what the object is able and willing to give. At the unconscious level, greed aims primarily at completely scooping out, sucking dry, and devouring the breast: that is to say, its aim is destructive introjection; whereas envy not only seeks to rob in this way, but also to put badness. Primarily bad excrements and bad parts of the self, into the mother, and first of all into her breast, in order to spoil and destroy her. In the deepest sense this means destroying her creativeness. This process, which derives from urethral- and anal-sadistic impulses, I have elsewhere defined as a destructive aspect of projective identification starting from the beginning of life. One essential difference between greed and envy, although no rigid dividing line can be drawn since they are so closely associated, would accordingly be that greed is mainly bound up with introjection and envy with projection.

Envy and gratitude (III-pp181)

Gratitude

In contrast with the infant who, owing to his envy, has been unable to build up securely a good internal object, a child with a strong capacity for love and gratitude has a deep-rooted relation with a good object and can, without being fundamentally damaged, withstand temporary states of envy, hatred, and grievance, which arise even in children who are loved and well mothered.

… One major derivative of the capacity for love is the feeling of gratitude. Gratitude is essential in building up the relation to the good object and underlies also the appreciation of goodness in others and in oneself. Gratitude is rooted in the emotions and attitudes that arise in the earliest stage of infancy, when for the baby the mother is the one and only object. I have referred to this early bond as the basis for all later relations with one loved person.

Envy and gratitude (III-pp187)
